COVID-19 Update: 60-day Extension of Moratorium on Foreclosures and Evictions

Gov. Wolf signed an executive order to extend moratorium.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to adversely impact the economy, Governor Tom Wolf signed an executive order extending the moratorium on foreclosures and evictions in Pennsylvania. As a result, banks cannot process foreclosures and landlords cannot process evictions in Pennsylvania for another two months. This means that no Pennsylvania resident will be removed from their home due to an eviction or foreclosure until July 10, 2020.

It is important to note that unless a homeowner has made an agreement with their mortgage lender or a renter has made an agreement with their landlord to the contrary, mortgage payments and rental agreements must continue to be made during this moratorium.

“At a time when people need to stay home to protect their health, they should not have to worry about losing their homes. Ensuring that people can remain in their homes will help them to better protect their loved ones.

It gives families the comfort of knowing they will have a place to live while all of us work together to fight COVID-19 and prepare to move Pennsylvania forward.”

Governor Tom Wolf

On May 1, 2020, Governor Wolf offered recommendations to prevent foreclosures and evictions and to assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

PHFA is also recommending that Low-Income Housing Tax Credit building managers be flexible on rent payments and waive late fees for tenants who are unemployed due to COVID-19.
